Lead-acid batteries are widely used in various fields, but the ordinary AGM type has some problems, such as the decrease of electrolyte moisture leads to the change of sulfuric acid concentration, requiring frequent water addition maintenance; Acid fog precipitates during charging, causing harm to the environment and equipment. To solve these problems, researchers have developed colloidal electrolyte lead-acid batteries. By using solid electrolytes instead of sulfuric acid electrolytes, this battery improves safety, charge storage, discharge performance and service life. The working principle of the colloidal battery is the same as that of the ordinary lead-acid battery, but the three-dimensional network structure of the silicon gel inside the battery wraps the electrolyte, prevents the liquid transfer, and retains the liquid components. When the silica sol becomes gel, the gel skeleton will shrink, causing cracks in the gel to penetrate between the positive and negative plates, providing a channel for the oxygen precipitated from the positive electrode to reach the negative electrode. The seal working principle of the colloidal battery and the AGM battery is the same, the difference is that the "fixed" way of the electrolyte and the way of providing oxygen to the negative channel are different.
As an important raw material for the preparation of colloidal battery electrolytes, colloidal silica has the advantages of convenient use, health, environmental protection and obvious cost benefit. Because of the stability and dispersion of colloidal silica liquid, it is easier to manufacture colloidal batteries with colloidal silica than with fumed silica. The use of colloidal silica in the preparation process avoids contact with fumed silica dust, making handling easier and improving the production environment.
